جَحَدتُI denied الهَوىlove حَتَّىuntil تَبدَّتappeared شُهودُهُits witnesses
فصَرَّحتُso I spoke openly بالكِتمَانِof concealment والحَقُّand the truth أبلَجُplain
I denied love until its witnesses appeared.
So I spoke openly of concealment, though the truth is plain.
جُفُونِيَmy eyelids مِنfrom ذُلِّthe humiliation of الحِجَابthe veil قَريحَةٌwounded
فلاso no دَمعَtear إلاَّexcept وَهوَwhile it بالدَّمwith blood يُمزَجُis mingled
My eyelids are wounded by the humiliation of the veil.
No tear is shed without being mingled with blood.
جَعلتُI placed عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart يَدَيَّmy two hands تألُّماًin pain
فلمso I did not أرَsee إلاّexcept جَمرَةًan ember تَتَأجَّجُblazing
I laid my two hands upon my heart in pain.
But I saw nothing but an ember blazing.
جُبلتُI was fashioned علىfor حُبٍّlove لمَنfor the one أنَاI عَبدُهُhis servant
فَلحظيَso my gaze إطرَاقٌlowering the gaze ولَفظِيand my speech تَلجَلُجُstammering
I was fashioned to love the one whose servant I am.
So my gaze is lowered, and my speech falters.
جَزانيrewarded me هَواهُlove for him لَوعَةًanguish وَصبابَةًand yearning
وَإِنِّيand indeed I إلىof غَيرِother than الجَزاءَينِthe two rewards أحوجُmore in need
Love for him rewarded me with anguish and yearning.
Yet I have greater need of something other than those two rewards.
جَمَعتُI joined بكَbecause of you الضِّدَّينِthe two opposites جَمعَa union of ضَرورَةٍnecessity
فَجَفنِيَso my eyelid مَمطورٌrained upon وقَلبيand my heart مُنَضَّجُroasted
Because of you, I joined the two opposites in a union of necessity.
So my eyelid is rain-drenched, and my heart is roasted.
جَريتُI raced مَعَwith الأشواقِthe longings مِلءَthe full extent of عِنانهاtheir rein
وَقُربُكَand your nearness مَطلوِبٌsought وحُبُّكَand your love مُنهِجُcausing breathlessness
I raced with my longings, giving them full rein.
Your nearness is sought, and your love leaves me breathless.
جِنَانُgardens of التَّجَلِّيunveiling للجَنانfor the heart مُعَدَّةٌprepared
ولاand not جاَunclear as written أرقَىI rise فيin رِضَاهُhis good pleasure وأعرُجُand I ascend
The gardens of unveiling are prepared for the heart.
[Opening unclear] I rise and ascend in his good pleasure.
جَميعُall المُنَىwishes فِيin لَمحةٍa glance لَوجَنَيتُهاif I could reap it
فمَرآكَfor the sight of you أبهىmore radiant فيin العُقولِthe minds وأبهَجُand more gladdening
All wishes lie in a glance, could I but reap it.
For the sight of you is more radiant and more gladdening to the mind.
جَمالُكَyour beauty لِيfor me عَيشٌlife وصَدُّكَand your turning away ليfor me رَدًىdeath
فأنتfor you الَّذيthe one who تُبلِيyou afflict وأنتَand you تُفَرِّجُyou bring relief
Your beauty is life to me; your turning away is death to me.
For you are the one who afflicts, and you bring relief.
