How splendid were my days with you,

if only weariness had not overtaken them.

They departed the moment they arrived,

so they seemed to have been a dream.

They were like life itself; I lost them,

and faced the terrors of the Resurrection.

There is no good in life after you,

O son of al-Muʿizz, nor any honor.

O my lord, I bear an affection

which you know I steadfastly uphold.

    Indeed, separation has not diminished

    what you knew—not even by a nail-paring.

How could an affection prove faithless

when piety has been its pillar?

And I have composed, though far away,

verse, yet could not praise its composition.

And even that falls short for one present,

who sought clarity when he attempted it,

in a setting where neither Ibn al-ʿAmīd

    would speak, nor Qudāmah.

    You mastered the sciences, leaving

no sheath upon any blossom within them.

And in generosity's race you put to shame

the heights of Kaʿb ibn Māmah.

So live forever: for merit, as long as

you live, is delivered from injustice.

And guard against the harm of time

with the most protective armor of eminence.

And I have regretted our parting,

and regret is all I can do about it.

If you depart, my love for you

is fair in feature and countenance.

    في خاطري لهما المقامه

    Your nearness and separation are alike;

in my mind, both hold the same place.

    وإذا نأيت فبالسَّلامه

    So when you draw near, welcome;

and when you go far away, may you be safe.

Then peace be upon you as long as

a dove sings upon a bough.
