خَنازيرُswine نامواthey slept عَنِheedless of المَكرُماتِthe noble deeds
خَنازيرُ ناموا عَنِ المَكرُماتِ
فَأَنبَهَهُمso it awakened them قَدَرٌfate لَمdid not يَنَمsleep
فَأَنبَهَهُم قَدَرٌ لَم يَنَم
Swine slept on, heedless of noble deeds;
Swine slept, heedless of noble deeds;
then a Fate that never slept awakened them.
so fate, which did not sleep, awakened them.
فَياso, oh! قُبحَهُمtheir ugliness فيin الَّذيthat which خُوِّلواthey were granted
فَيا قُبحَهُم في الَّذي خُوِّلوا
وَياand, oh! حُسنَهُمtheir beauty فيin زَوالِthe loss of النِعَمthe blessings
وَيا حُسنَهُم في زَوالِ النِعَم
How vile they are among humankind when showered with gifts—
So how ugly they are in what they were granted,
and how fair they seem when blessings fall away!
and how beautiful they are in the loss of blessings!
