ياO نائمَsleeping الطَّرفِthe eyes عنheedless of سُهديmy sleeplessness وعَنand heedless of أرَقيmy insomnia
وفارغَand free القَلبthe heart مِنof وجديmy longing ومِنand of حُرَقيmy burning pains
O you whose eyes sleep, heedless of my sleeplessness and insomnia,
And whose heart is free of my longing and burning anguish,
إلامَhow long أُتلِفُهاI destroy it نَفساًa soul مُعَذَّبةًtormented
علىsubject to نَقيضينِtwo opposites للإحراقِfor burning والغَرَقِand drowning
How long shall I destroy my tormented soul
Through two opposites—burning and drowning?
وإنَّand indeed أغربَthe strangest شَيءٍthing أنتَyou سامِعُهُhearing it
دَمعٌtears يُكفكِفُهُwipes it away أجفانُeyelids مُحتَرِقِone aflame
And indeed, the strangest thing you will hear
Is tears wiped away by the eyelids of one aflame.
فتارَةًso at times أناI مِنof وَصلٍunion عَلىin طَمَعٍhope
وتارَةًand at times أناI مِنfrom يأسٍdespair عَلىin فَرَقِdread
So at times I am hopeful of union,
And at times, in despair, I am filled with dread.
كَمhow often رُمتُI sought إرسَالَsending أَنفاسِيmy breaths مُؤَدِّيةًconveying a message
عَنِّيon my behalf إليكَto you فقالَthen said القَلبُthe heart لاdo not تَثِقِtrust
How often I have sought to send my breaths as messengers
On my behalf to you; then the heart said, 'Do not trust.'
كأنَّماas though زَفَراتِيmy sighs فيwithin جَوانِحِهاits ribs
سَماِئمُscorching winds القَيظِmidsummer heat فيamong ذاوٍwithered منof الوَرقِleaves
As though my sighs, within my breast,
Were scorching midsummer winds among withered leaves.
ليتَif only المحبَّةَlove للعُشاقfor lovers ماnot خُلِقَتwas created
أوor لَيتَنيif only I حينَwhen ذَاقُواthey tasted الحُبَّlove لمdid not أذُقِI taste
If only love had not been created for lovers,
Or that, when they tasted love, I had not tasted it.
هذاthis الفُراقُparting وهذاand this الهَجرُabandonment يَتبَعُهُfollows it
ياO قَلبُheart صَبراًpatience علىthrough مَوتينِtwo deaths فيin نَسَقِsuccession
Here is parting, and here is abandonment following it;
O heart, be patient through two deaths in succession.
أقولُI say للنَّفسِto the soul والأشواقُwhile longings تَغلِبُهاoverwhelm it
كيفَhow التَّخَلُّصُescape بينَbetween الوَعرِrough ground والزَّلَقِand slippery ground
I say to my soul, while longings overwhelm it:
How can one escape between rough ground and slippery ground?
ياO عينُeye أنتِyou سَرحتِyou let roam الطّرفthe gaze فانهَمِليso pour out tears
ياO قلبُheart أنتَyou أجَلتَyou set roaming الفِكرَthought فاحتَرِقِso burn
O eye, you let your gaze wander—so pour out tears.
O heart, you let thought roam—so burn.
