دُمُوعِيmy tears أبَتrefused إلاّexcept انسِكاباًpouring forth لَعَلَّهاperhaps they
بِمَكنُونِto the secret of حُبِّيmy love عِندَbefore خِلِّيَmy beloved تَشهَدُbear witness
My tears would do nothing but pour forth; perhaps they
bear witness before my beloved to my hidden love.
دَنَوتُI drew near فأقصَانيso he drove me away فَعُدتُso I returned فَرَدَّنيso he turned me back
فَلاso not هُوَيُدنِينيhe brings me near ولاnor أناI أبعُدُdraw away
I drew near, but he drove me away; I returned, but he turned me back.
So he does not bring me near, nor do I draw away.
دُهِيتُI was stricken بِفقدَانٍby the loss لِمَنof one whom قَدalready وَجَدتُهُI found him
فَلاso no إمَدمَعُtears (text appears corrupted) يَرقَاceases to flow ولاnor وَجدَyearning يَخمُدُdies down
I was stricken by the loss of one I had found;
so no tear ceases to flow, nor does yearning die down.
دَبيبُcreeping الهَوىlove بينَbetween الضُّلُُوعthe ribs مُؤجِّجٌkindling
لهَيبَa blaze of اشتياقٍyearning فيهِin it للقَلبfor the heart مَوردُa watering place
Love's creeping between the ribs kindles
a blaze of yearning in which the heart has a watering place.
دَعانيleave me be, you two فَمَنfor whoever ذَاقَtasted الهَوىlove ثَمّthen (likely intended reading) لمdid not يَنَلattain
وصَالَunion with حَبيبٍa beloved كيفَhow لاnot يتَنَهَّدُhe sighs
Leave me be, you two, for whoever tastes love and then fails to gain
union with a beloved—how can he not sigh?
دَعاوَىclaims الأسَىsorrow عِنديwith me عَلَيكَagainst you صَحِيحةٌvalid
فَقَلبيَfor my heart خَفَّاقٌfluttering وَجَفنِيand my eyelid مُسَهَّدُkept sleepless
The claims of sorrow I hold against you are well founded:
for my heart flutters, and my eyelid is kept sleepless.
دَمِيmy blood بِكًَbecause of you مَسفوكٌspilled وَدمعِيand my tears بسَفكِهِwith its spilling
فَيَصلُحُso is mended قَلبيmy heart فيكَin you مِنfrom حَيثُwhere يَفسُدُit is ruined
My blood is spilled because of you, and my tears with its spilling;
so my heart is mended in you, precisely where it is ruined.
دَفَائنُburied treasures حُبٍّof love فيin لُحودِthe tombs of جَوانحٍinner ribs
لهابِكَfor them, through you حَشرٌa resurrection كُلَّevery يومٍday ومَوعِدُand an appointed meeting
Love's buried treasures, in the tombs of the ribs,
have, through you, a resurrection and an appointed meeting each day.
دُجايَmy darkness إذاwhen واصَلتَyou grant union يَومٌa day مُؤبَّدٌeverlasting
ويَومِيand my day إذَاwhen أبعَدتَyou withdraw لَيلٌa night مُسَرمَدُunending
My darkness, when you grant union, is an everlasting day,
and my day, when you withdraw, is a night without end.
دُنُوُّكَyour nearness أقصَىthe utmost of ماwhat أقحِبُّI love (apparent typo) وأشتَهيand I desire
فإنfor if نِلتُهُI attain it فَهوَthen it is النَّعيمُthe bliss المُخَلَّدُeverlasting
Your nearness is the utmost of what I love and desire;
for if I attain it, it is everlasting bliss.
