كَتمتُI concealed الهَوىَlove حتَّىuntil تَبَدَّتappeared سِمَاتُهُits signs
فَحُقِّقَso was confirmed حُبٌّa love كانَwas فيin حَيِّزِthe realm of الشَّكِّdoubt
I concealed love until its signs appeared,
so a love once in the realm of doubt was confirmed.
كَحَلتُI applied kohl to جُفُونِيmy eyelids بالسُّهادِwith sleeplessness عُقوبَةًas punishment

I lined my eyelids with sleeplessness as punishment
for a secret seen amid tossing and the shedding of tears.
كَلِفتُI became enamored بِحِبٍّof a beloved لاnot أسَمِّيهِI name him هَيبَةًout of awe
وَليسَand does not يَصُدَّhold back الخَتمُthe seal عَنfrom عَبَقِthe fragrance of المسكِmusk
I became enamored of a beloved whom I do not name, out of awe;
yet no seal can hold back the fragrance of musk.
كَنَيتُI referred indirectly عَنِto المَحبُوبِthe beloved بالغَيرِthrough another غَيرةًout of jealousy
وَقَلبيand my heart بَرِيءٌfree فيin هَوَاهُlove for him مِنَof الشِّركِassociating partners
I referred to the beloved by another's name, out of jealousy,
and my heart, in loving him, is free of divided devotion.
كَبِيرٌweighty عَلَىupon قَلبِيmy heart وَحُلؤٌand sweet علَىupon فَمِيmy mouth
فَماso not أنَاI مِنfrom حُبِّيmy love وذِكريand my remembrance بمُنفَكِّparted
It weighs heavily on my heart, yet is sweet upon my lips,
so I cannot part from my love and remembrance.
كَسَانِيclothed me الضَّنَىwasting sickness فِيin قُربهِhis nearness خَوفَfear of بُعدِهِhis distance
ولاand no شيءthing بَعدَafter الوَصلِunion أنكىmore wounding مِنَthan التَّركِabandonment
Even in his nearness, fear of his distance clothed me in wasting sickness,
and after union, nothing wounds more deeply than abandonment.
كِلاboth of حَالتيthe two states of هَذَاthis الهوَىlove حَالُa state of لَذَّةٍdelight
فَسِيَّانِso both are alike عِندِيto me حِينَwhen أضحَكُI laugh أوor أبكِيI weep
Both states of this love are states of delight,
so it is all the same to me whether I laugh or weep.
كَفىit is enough حَزَناًas sorrow أنِّيthat I أَسِيرُa captive of صَبابَةٍardent longing
ولاand no طَمَعٌhope ليfor me فيof فِداءٍransom وَفيand of فَكِّrelease
It is sorrow enough that I am a captive of ardent longing,
and I have no hope of ransom or release.
كشَفتُI lifted حِجابَthe veil of القًلبِthe heart عَمَّاfrom what وَراءَهُbehind it
فَعَايَنتُthen I beheld بَحراًa sea لَيسَnot يُعبَرُis crossed بالفُلكِby ships
I lifted the heart's veil from what lay behind it,
then I beheld a sea that cannot be crossed by ships.

إذاwhen فَنِيَis effaced المَملُوكُthe slave فيin مالِكِthe Master of الملُكِdominion
The fulfillment of wishes, if you seek what you wish for,
is when the slave is effaced in the Master of dominion.
