Ever since you departed, O Abu al-Abbas, I have been
Since you departed, O Abu al-Abbas, I have been
between hope of reunion and despair;
in hope of reunion, and in despair.

and tears for our parting stream down—but
And tears of parting pour down, but
the heat of my sighs has dried them.

How fares a man from whom Tlemce—
How fares a man when Tlemcen lies far

What I have suffered since you grew distant
What I have suffered since you went far away

No—by a gazelle who veils a cheek with a temple-lock,
No—by a gazelle who guards a cheek with a sidelock,
thus sheltering a freshly plucked rose with myrtle;
thus guarding the freshly picked rose with myrtle,

and by eyelids that have learned the craft of magic,
and thereby surpassed the minds of humankind—
so people's minds have gone astray through them:

ما مقامي وقد فقدتك إلا

كمقام الذراع في المقياس
now that I have lost you, my place is nothing but
My place, now that I have lost you, is only
the cubit's place within the measure.
like the measuring rod's place in the water gauge.
