كَأَنَّماas though طَرَقَتvisited by night لَيلىLayla مُعَهَّدةًa repeatedly rain-watered plot
مِنَfrom among الرِياضِthe meadows وَلاهاtended it عارِضٌa raincloud تَرِعُbrimming
It was as though Layla had visited by night a rain-refreshed plot
among the meadows, tended by a brimming raincloud.
طافَتcircled بِهاaround it ذاتُone possessing أَلوانٍcolors مُشَبَّهةin assumed likenesses
ذَريعَةswift-moving الجِنِّof the jinn لاnot تُعطيshe gives وَلاand not تَدَعُshe leaves alone
Around it roamed a many-colored being in assumed guises,
a swift one of the jinn, neither giving nor leaving alone.
وَالخائِعُand al-Khāʾiʿ (meaning uncertain) الجَونُthe dark آتٍapproaching عَنfrom شَمائِلِهِمtheir left sides
وَنائِعُand Nāʾiʿ (meaning uncertain) النَعفِthe hillside عَنon أَيمانِهِمtheir right sides يَفَعُlofty
And dark al-Khāʾiʿ approaches from their left,
while Nāʾiʿ of the hillside stands lofty on their right.
فَماso not أَرَدناwe desired بِهاin her place منany خُلَّةٍbeloved بَدَلاًa replacement
وَلاand not بِهاconcerning her رَقَصَthe capering الواشينَof the slanderers نَستَمِعُwe listen
So we sought no other beloved in her place,
nor do we heed the slanderers’ capering about her.
سَلَّwasted الهَوىpassion وَلباناتُand the yearnings الفُؤادِof the heart بِهاfor her
وَالقَلبُand the heart شاكيcomplaining of الهَوىpassion مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove of her شَكِعُdistraught
Love has wasted me; the heart’s yearnings are for her,
and the heart, complaining of passion, is distraught with love of her.
كَأَنَّهُمas though they يَومَthe day ذيDhī (possessor of) الغرّاءِal-Gharrāʾ حينَwhen غَدَتset out at dawn
نُكباًveering aside جِمالُهُمُtheir camels لِلبَينِfor parting فَاِندَفَعواso they hurried off
As if, that day at Dhī al-Gharrāʾ, when at dawn
their camels veered away for parting and they hurried off,
لَمdid not يُصبِحِbecome القَومُthe people جيراناًneighbors فَكُلُّso every نَوىresolve
بِالناسِamong people لاno صَدعَrift فيهاin it سَوفَwill تَنصدِعُsplit apart
the people had never been neighbors; every resolve
among people, though unbroken, will someday split apart.
