أَنمي فَأَعقِلُ في ضَبيسٍ مَعقِلاً

أَنمي فَأَعقِلُ في ضَبيسٍ مَعقِلاً

ضَخماً مَناكِبُهُ عَظيمُ الهادي

ضَخماً مَناكِبُهُ عَظيمُ الهادي

I trace my lineage and find in Dabīs a stronghold,

I awake, sane, in a mighty citadel

Broad-shouldered, with a mighty neck.

Lofty are its bastions, great its guide,

وَالعقد في مَلّانَ غَيرُ مُزلّجٍ

وَالعقد في مَلّانَ غَيرُ مُزلّجٍ

بِقوىً متيناتِ الحِبالِ شِدادِ

بِقوىً متيناتِ الحِبالِ شِدادِ

And the bond in Mallān is not loosely fastened,

The knots in its full quivers unyielding

With firm strands of sturdy ropes.

With stout, unbroken cords tightly tied.

وَأَرى كَريمَكَ لا كَريمَة دونَه

وَأَرى كَريمَكَ لا كَريمَة دونَه

وَأَرى بِلادَك مَنقَعاً لِجَوادي

وَأَرى بِلادَك مَنقَعاً لِجَوادي

And I see your noble one, with no noble quality beyond his reach,

Your generosity I see has no peer,

And I see your lands as a watering place for my steed.

Your lands I see give pasture to my steed.

قَشَمت فَجرَّ بِرِجلِها أَصحابُها

قَشَمت فَجرَّ بِرِجلِها أَصحابُها

وَحَشوا عَلى حَفصٍ لَها وَعِمادِ

وَحَشوا عَلى حَفصٍ لَها وَعِمادِ

She grew decrepit; her companions dragged her by the leg,

They charged and their riders broke with their legs,

And for her they massed against Hafs and ʿImād.

And crowded on Hafs, her pillar and stay.

يَئِسَ القِصارُ فَلَسنَ مِن نِسوانِها

يَئِسَ القِصارُ فَلَسنَ مِن نِسوانِها

وَمماشِهِنَّ لَها مِنَ الحُسّادِ

وَمماشِهِنَّ لَها مِنَ الحُسّادِ

The short women despaired, for they are not among her women,

The archers despaired, ceasing to shoot,

And their walking companions are among those who envy her.

While her arrows at them spewed from each bow made.
