وَنَفضتُand I shook off عَنّيfrom me نَومَهاits slumber فَسَرَيتُهاso I traversed it by night
بِالقَومِwith the company مِنincluding تَهِمٍa drowsy man وَأَلعَثَand a sluggish man وَانِweary
And I shook its slumber off me and journeyed through it by night,
I shook off its slumber and led it astray
with the company—drowsy men and sluggish, weary ones.
With people prone to blame and sinfulness.
ثُمَّthen اِعتَمَدتُI made my way إِلىtoward اِبنِthe son of لَيلىLayla تَختَويshe devours
مِنon دونِهِthis side of him مُتَباعدَthe remote stretches البُلدانِof the lands
Then I made for Ibn Layla, my mount devouring
Then I leaned on the son of Layla though he hides
the far-flung stretches of country that lay before him.
Far from me in distant lands.
وَمُمَدَّحٍand many a much-praised man بِالمُكرماتِfor noble deeds مَدَحتُهُI praised him
فَاِهتَزَّso he thrilled وَاِستَودىand was carried away بِهِby it فَحَبانيso he gave me a gift
And many a man lauded for noble deeds I praised;
And I praised him for his noble deeds; my praises
so he thrilled, was carried away by it, and gave me a gift.
Moved him, and he loved me in his absence.
