جَلا بَرقُها جَونَ الصَناديدِ مُظلِما
A Rajab night called us to journey by night;
She called us to a journey on a rajab night,
its lightning unveiled the dark mass of mighty storm clouds.
Its lightning lit up the dark dens of snakes.

وَيَعلو شَآميهِ شَرورى وَأَظلَما
Its southern flank sways toward Bisha's valley bends,
Its right side whistles to tree trunks of bishah,
and its northern flank rises over Sharawra and Azlam.
And its left rises with evil and darker still.

يَحُطُّ إِلى السَهل اليَسوميّ أَعصَما
And we traveled with a gentle, dew-soft strain of song
And we walked with soft, indulgent gaits
that draws a white-legged ibex down to Yasum's plain.
That descend to the easy, smooth plain.

They called to one another in the dim darkness; then were brought
They called in the darkness of blackness, and brought near
stout she-camels, already layered with abundant fat.
Milk-filled waterskins that plainly overflowed.

They nip al-Abahir's sa'dan in the dew,
They pick sa'dan roses in the dew
and lavender clusters and the thickly bunched nasi-grass.
And clusters of khuzami and nusayri heaped up.

And if she crops it close, it droops in a thick mass, as though it were
And if she passes a withered jathal it's as though
the warp of women seated at their work, weavers of Khath'am.
She crossed withered branches of kuth'am.
