What a fine youth is the scrawny, reeking son of al-A‘mash,
What a fine lad 'the son of Al-A'mash', unkempt and disheveled
Were it not for head-shaving, madness, and foul breath!
If not for the barber and his madness and perfume

His teeth, when he bares them, look like
When he grins his teeth are like
Swollen, rotten gourd seeds.
Dated seeds of gourd, decayed and hollow

Ah, how splendid your mother—the woman of all mankind!
Blessed was your mother, the most virtuous of womankind
And may she receive a good reward on behalf of the penis-heads.
May she be rewarded with goodness for the fruit she bore

Whoever does harm after her splitting—may he never mend.
He who errs after her guidance can never make amends
