Today Zayd al-Khayl was wrapped in a shroud,

and the bound-up tears of streaming eyes came loose.

Sons of Humayd, if time could be restrained,

it would recoil at your mention from a rugged flank.

If time’s vicissitudes sift out your souls,

while people remain safe between the watering trough and the camels’ resting ground,

it is no wonder that the sweetest water

runs out, while the life of stagnant, foul water is prolonged.

A calamity has laid its heavy breasts upon Tayy—

no, rather upon Udad; no, rather upon Yemen.

They have lost no lion of war like Qahtaba

since Qahtaba in days gone by.

If war has not ended with a pleasing sight,

it has at least ended with a pleasing tale.

What a fine youth—no weakling in sword combat, nor

soft of heart when supple spears struck.

He yearned for death until one who did not know him thought

that he yearned, full of longing, for his homeland.

The defenders fled, and in his fury he remained

with fighting zeal, as though bound to it by a tether.

He saw deaths as snares for souls, so he would not

rest in any resting place save the noblest death.

If he had not died among the spearpoints, then

he would have died of intense grief at not having died.
