The prince has taken his place as the benefactor's support,

and as one who freely gives his newly acquired and inherited wealth.

God bless you—what a generous, noble man!

Gentle in disposition, peerless in noble deeds.

Fortune freely grants that which bestows riches

on one looked to for help, whether departing or arriving.

Why, then, am I cut off from your bounty,

while you regard another with a father's eye?

How many give thanks to Prince Muhammad

among all peoples, and how many praise him!

Despair has bound me to the place of one who stays behind,

since my fortune is not rising among fortunes.

Why have I been denied the favor you show Khalid?

Is my claim to your regard not older than Khalid's?

A dearth of men has given Khalid's benefaction its standing,

and summer has made the markets for the cold man's coolness thrive.

Two inveterate liars, whose speech is foul,

have taken with you the place of Amr the ascetic.
