Say to the magnanimous emir, whose
Tell the generous Bedouin prince
two hands serve nomad and townsman alike:
Who sufficed for the nomad and the sedentary
لِتَجزِكَmay they reward you الأَيّامُthe days مَندوحَةًample scope
وَنَضرَةًand freshness مِنfrom عودِيَmy bough الناضِرِflourishing
May the days reward you with ample scope
That your days may bring you respite
and freshness from my flourishing bough.
And freshness from my blossoming sapling
أَشكُرُI give thanks for نُعمىa favor مِنكَfrom you مَشكورَةًworthy of gratitude
وَكافِرُand one ungrateful for النَعماءِblessings كَالكافِرِlike an unbeliever
I thank you for a favor worthy of gratitude,
I thank you for your favors I'm grateful for
and one ungrateful for blessings is like an unbeliever.
While the ungrateful is like the infidel

Gifts that could come only from one
Gifts that were only for those
whose stock is rooted in abundant nobility.
Whose fortune is in a generous position

May you always wear a robe of my gratitude,
You still thank me in a garment
whose wearer is clad in splendid raiment.
Worn by one with splendid spoils

كَمhow much تَرَكَleft الأَوَّلُthe predecessor لِلآخِرِfor the successor
One whose ears it strikes says:
Those who listen say
"How much the predecessor left for the successor!"
How much did the first leave for the last?
ليI have صاحِبٌa friend قَدindeed كانَwas ليto me مُؤنِساًa comforting companion

I have a friend who once was a comfort to me,
I had a friend who was a companion to me
and a familiar companion in days gone by.
And an intimate in time gone by

وَيَخلِطُand he mixes الحُلوَthe sweet مَعَwith الحازِرِthe sour
He milks Time for its successive yields,
He milks fate of its mornings
and mixes the sweet with the sour.
And mixes the sweet with the bitter

Until, when my garden echoed with the song
Until, when my meadow sang to him
of its flies amid delightful bloom,
Its bucks in a flourishing enclosure

he fertilized his hopes with resolve,
He conceived his wishes
after embracing barren ambition.
After embracing the barren resolve

In him, the pale camels carry an oddity
It bears from him a marvel
that renews the scoffer's mockery:
That renews the mockery of the mocker
ذاa man of ثَروَةٍwealth يَطلُبُhe seeks مِنfrom سائِلٍa supplicant
وَمُفحَماًand one unable to compose verse يَأخُذُhe takes مِنfrom شاعِرِa poet
a wealthy man seeking aid from a supplicant,
One of wealth sought by the beseecher
and a nonpoet taking from a poet.
And a confounder who takes from the poet

مَنِيَّةٌdoom مِنfrom أَمَلٍa hope عاثِرِstumbling
So, with his arrival, my wealth encountered
But his inclination met my money
a doom born of a stumbling hope.
With a loss from a stumbling hope
فَشارِكِso share with المَقمورَthe gambling loser فيهِin it وَلاand do not
تَكُنbe شَريكَa partner of الرَجُلِthe man القامِرِthe winning gambler
So share in it with the gambling loser, and do not
Share with the oppressed through it, and do not
be a partner to the winning gambler.
Be partner to the gambling man

For your aid to a visitor is glory, and nothing
So visiting you is glory, and not
matches your aid to one visitor for another.
Like your visiting of the visitor
