Renew your lament, wailing woman, renew it.
I weep profusely, then weep some more
And add to your weeping, then add still more.
As I grieve, lament, and implore

And rise bareheaded among bareheaded women,
My tears flow freely down my cheeks
clawing at their upper chests and cheeks.
For the noble man the death reeks

It is the calamity that invented afflictions,
He who brought about many calamities
and told the eyes of humankind and jinn: 'Pour forth!'
And told the eyes of mortals to shed tear seas

Alas, Khurasan has been bereaved of her young hero,
Alas! Khorasan was stricken by the loss of its pride
on the morning Umayr ibn al-Walid lay dead.
The morning Umair bin Al Waleed died

Alas, you have lost one who was asked for gifts and gave them;
Alas! You were afflicted with the death of a helpful advisor
alas, you have lost a lavish spender and benefactor.
Alas! You were deprived of a beneficial provider

Lo, generosity and bounty have settled
Indeed, munificence and charity have descended
where you have settled, in one of the earth's pits.
Where you settled in the sands

My life be your ransom—a king struck
By my soul! You were a king whose fate
by his appointed death with an unerring arrow of doom.
Was sealed by a wayward arrow of deadly trait

The turmoil of battle cleared away from him,
The darkness of sadness lifted from his face
his face stained with his congealed blood.
Bloodied by his pure vermillion trace
فَياso O بَحرَsea of المَنونِdeath ذَهَبتَyou carried off مِنهُfrom him

O sea of death, you carried off in him
Oh sea of grief! In the generous year, from him you ebbed
a sea of generosity in a drought-stricken year.
Oh lion of sorrow! Morning came, and pride you robbed

And, lion of death, you slew in him
Is it the noble warrior you defeated?
the lion of lions, that morning when you slew him.
Yes, and the killer of the noble hero you treated

To the stabber he was exposed
Yes—and a slayer of valiant heroes.
As the faces of death rosed

وُجوهُthe faces of المَوتِdeath مِنof حُمرٍred ones وَسودِand black ones
He showed himself for spear-combat, while there appeared
None veiled his head but the sword
the faces of death, red and black.
That masked him with its steely facade
فَلَمso not يَكُنِhe was المُقَنَّعَthe veiled one فيهِin it رَأساًat all
خَلاexcept أَنthat قَدalready تَقَنَّعَhe veiled himself بِالحَديدِin iron
So he was not veiled at all in that fighting,
Oh what a majestic fall you brought
save that he had veiled himself in iron.
That evoked utmost grief and sorrow fraught
فَياso O لَكَfor you وَقعَةًa battle جَلَلاًgrievous أَعارَتlent

Oh, what a grievous battle, which lent
Oh what a battlefield you left behind
sorrow and yearning the steadfast man's endurance!
To torment our hearts for all time
وَياand O لَكَfor you ساحَةًa battlefield أَهدَتbestowed غَليلاًburning anguish

And what a battlefield, which bestowed burning anguish
Indeed our prince was never remiss
on our livers for ever and ever!
In just rule and care for his people and troops

And our commander spared no effort in devoted care
To them he gave generously
and justice toward his subjects and troops.
Forgiving folly and stupidity
أَفاضَoverflowed نَوالُthe bounty of راحَتِهِhis palm لَدَيهِمamong them

The bounty of his palm overflowed among them,
He stood before death to protect them
and he gave freely of newly gained and inherited wealth.
Until death gave him the poison cup to sip
وَأَصحَرَand went into the open دونَهُمin their defense لِلمَوتِto face death حَتّىuntil

And he went into the open to face death in their defense, until
They could not defeat him
death gave him bitter colocynth to drink.
Until faced by lions and snarling hyenas

And they did not overcome him until he had served them up
With stabs penetrating their chests
to aged vultures and hyenas of the wastes,
And blows landing on their heads

with fierce thrusts into their throats
Oh Tuesday! We woke to your overwhelming calamity
and with unyielding blows upon their heads.
Oh Tuesday! We relied on the pillar of certainty lost
فَياso O يَومَday of الثُلاثاءِTuesday اِصطَبَحناwe drank at dawn
غَداةًa dawn مِنكَfrom you هائِلَةَdreadful الوُرودِin its coming
O Tuesday, we drank as our morning draught
How many tears you drew from our eyes
a dawn from you, dreadful in its coming.
How many revered men under your soil now lie
وَياand O يَومَday of الثُلاثاءِTuesday اِعتُمِدناwe were assailed
بِفَقدٍby the loss فيكَon you لِلسَنَدِof the support العَميدِthe chief
And, O Tuesday, we were struck
Your birds are not silenced from eulogizing
on you by the loss of our chief pillar.
Your stars not ceased from rising
فَكَمso how many أَسخَنتَyou made hot with grief مِنّاamong us مِنof عُيونٍeyes
وَكَمand how many أَعثَرتَyou made stumble فيناamong us مِنof جُدودِfortunes
How many of our eyes you have made hot with tears!
Oh fallen majestic king
And how many of our fortunes you made stumble!
Wrapped in death's cloak, coffinled
فَماso not زُجِرَتwere roused for augury طُيورُكَyour birds عَنfrom سَنيحٍan auspicious flight
وَلاand not طَلَعَتrose نُجومُكَyour stars بِالسُعودِwith good fortune
So your birds were not roused to an auspicious flight,
I came to your door in utter grief
nor did your stars rise with good fortune.
Overtaken by suffocation and disbelief
أَلاah ياO أَيُّهاyou المَلِكُthe king المُرَدّىclothed

Ah, O king, robed
I saw neglected steeds
in the mantle of death, within a hollowed grave!
And swords sheathed from heroic deeds
حَضَرتُI came to فَناءَthe courtyard of بابِكَyour gate فَاِعتَرانيthen seized me
شَجىًa choking grief بَينَbetween المُخَنَّقِthe throat وَالوَريدِand the jugular vein
I came to the courtyard by your gate, and was seized by
Made either to free a captive
a choking grief between my throat and jugular vein.
Or slay an arrogant combative
رَأَيتُI saw بِهِat it مَطاياriding-camels مُهمَلاتٍuntended

وَأَفراساًand horses صَوافِنَstanding with one hoof poised بِالوَصيدِat the threshold
There I saw riding-camels left untended,
I saw your hopeful followers' state shift
and horses standing with one hoof poised at the threshold.
Fortunes raised them then adrift
وَكُنَّand they had been عَتادَequipment إِمّاeither فَكِّfreeing عانٍa captive

They had been held ready either to free a captive
While in your presence they rose so high
or to slay a defiant tyrant.
In your absence to the ground they doth lie
رَأَيتُI saw مُؤمِليكَthose who hoped in you غَدَتcame in the morning عَلَيهِمupon them

عَوادٍafflictions أَصعَدَتهُمmade them climb فيinto كُؤودِa steep ascent
I saw those who hoped in you; upon them had come
All resigned to despair for your loss
afflictions that forced them up a steep ascent.
Halting aspiration, settling as dross
وَأَضحَتand became عِندَwith غَيرِكَsomeone other than you فيin هُبوطٍdecline
حُظوظٌfortunes كُنَّhad been عِندَكَwith you فيin صُعودِascent
And now with others they were falling—
To you, delegations stopped their tread
fortunes that, with you, had been rising.
As no reception for them ahead
وَكُلُّهُمُand every one of them أَعَدَّprepared اليَأسَdespair وَقفاًan endowment
عَلَيكَfor you وَنَصَّand drove hard راحِلَةَthe riding-camel of القُعودِsitting still
And each of them reserved despair as an endowment
Eyes of munificence heated for your intention
for you, and urged on the riding-camel of sitting still.
As the purpose of this elegy gained traction
وَأَصبَحَتِand became الوُفودُthe delegations إِلَيكَto you وَقفاًat a standstill
عَلىupon أَلّاthat no مُفادَgain لِمُستَفيدِfor a seeker of gain
And the delegations to you came to a standstill,
with no gain for any seeker of gain.

Indeed, generosity's eyes grew hot when
you departed, and the brightest of poems were struck dead.
