Praise for a rain-bearing star, to which praise is due!

In the month's opening nights, not its last dark nights.

It freed her from udder-ties and wooden pegs,

Then came singing her onward—how fine a driver!

Traveling by night, readily yielding to the rein,

Black in hue, yet white-handed in bounty,

Wakeful, yet sleeping long in the valley,

Often halting for the night in the hollows,

Alighting to the delight of God's servants,

Already set in ambush against drought.

Driven by lightning whose fire-sticks blaze,

As though it were the swords that scabbards hide,

Then by thunder, clamorous in its peals,

    Lashing her with sharp tongues.

When she journeyed by night to serve the land's need,

And her rear caught up with her foremost ranks,

    Then blackness mingled with blackness,

She brought the soil its morning bounty,

So its thirsty heads drank their fill.

How much provision she carried for the poor,

And remedy for a barren year,

And milked from its massive horn:

    Young she-camels, milk-rich and hardy,

And mares near foaling, poised and swift,

And finely patterned mantles of Yemeni cloth,

Of Atḥamī fabrics and rose-red robes,

A gift from the Eternal Refuge, the Bountiful,

Who is neither born nor a begetter,

    Withheld from townsfolk and nomads

Until she alights upon the moist earth.
