ياO لابِساًwearer of ثَوبَthe robe of المَلاحَةِbeauty أَبلِهِwear it out
فَلَأَنتَfor you are indeed أَولىmost worthy لابِسيهِits wearers بِلُبسِهِto wear it
O wearer of beauty’s robe, wear it out;
O you who don the garb of seamanship proudly
for you, of all its wearers, are worthiest to wear it.
Yet you are most deserving of wearing it
لَمdid not يُعطِكَgive you اللَهُGod الَّذيwhat أَعطاكَهُHe gave it to you
حَتّىuntil اِستَخَفَّHe made light بِبَدرِهِof His full moon وَبِشَمسِهِand of His sun
God did not give you what He gave you
God did not give you what He gave you
until He thought little of His full moon and His sun.
Until he belittled his full moon and his sun
رَشَأًa gazelle fawn إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle كانَhe would يُطلِقُlet loose نَفسَهُhimself
فيin فَتكِهِhis deadly assaults أَمَرَordered الحَياءُmodesty بِحَبسِهِthat he be restrained
A gazelle fawn: whenever he would let himself loose
A colt when he releases his soul
in his deadly assaults, modesty ordered him restrained.
In his vigor, modesty commands his restraint
وَأَناand I الَّذيthe one who أَعطَيتُهُI gave him مَحضَthe pure essence of الهَوىlove
وَصَميمَهُand its very essence وَأَخَذتُand I took عُذرَةَthe maidenhood of أُنسِهِhis intimacy
And I am the one who gave him pure love
And I who gave him pure passion
and its very essence, and took the maidenhood of his intimacy.
And its essence, and took the excuse of his intimacy
فَلَئِنso if indeed جَنَيتُI gathered ثِمارَهُhis fruits وَغَرستُهُand I planted him
ماnot كُنتُI was أَوَّلَthe first مَنone who جَنىreaped مِنfrom غَرسِهِhis own planting
So if I gathered his fruits, having planted him,
So if I reaped its fruits and planted it
I was not the first to reap from his own planting.
I was not the first to reap from its planting
مَولاكَyour servant ياO مَولايَmy lord صاحِبُone afflicted with لَوعَةٍburning anguish
فيin يَومِهِhis today وَصَبابَةٍand ardent longing فيin أَمسِهِhis yesterday
Your servant, O my lord, suffers burning anguish
My master, o my master, owner of grief
today, and suffered ardent longing yesterday.
In his day, and youthfulness in his past
دَنِفٌwasted by love يَجودُhe gives freely بِنَفسِهِof his own soul حَتّىuntil لَقَدindeed
أَمسىhe has become ضَعيفاًtoo weak أَنto يَجودَgive freely بِنَفسِهِof his own soul
Wasted by love, he is yielding up his soul, until indeed
A generous man who gives his soul until indeed
he has grown too weak even to yield up his soul.
He has become weak to give his soul
