O Muhammad ibn Sa'id, store up consolations;
In them is the noble man's draught on the day of his thirst.

You would be self-sufficient through your prudence and intelligence.

On any day, you have indeed beheld the image of his judgment.

I see noble virtue's age-mate weeping,
So I almost weep, in reverence for his weeping.

It is a duty upon the vigilant and wise,
And the verdict of an expert who understands his own verdict,

حَتّى يُعَزّى أَوَّلاً بِعَزائِهِ
That a distraught man not be consoled for his loved one
Until he is first consoled for the loss of his fortitude.
