O gazelle, tell the dark-eyed gazelle:

You have harbored treachery that is not hidden from you.

Go, for I did not grieve over you; and many a time

I made a remnant of life bear your absence, though it could not endure.

O water-seeker whose missteps drove him relentlessly onward,

You were not the first to seek water and never return.

The days have triumphed over you after your resistance,

As cares triumph over a lover who has not triumphed.

Oh, if only I knew: has all your reason gone astray,

Or are these the days of piercing the jewel?
