O dwelling, may drizzling dew circle over you,

    and may your meadow stir in the moist earth and sway;

and may rain's robes of honor clothe you in luxuriant growth,

fresh and ungrazed, leaving its wild beasts lion-bold.

A ruined site I lingered over, questioning it, until

its dwelling-place almost became a mosque for me.

I kept reciting verse to it and seeking its people,

sorrow my companion, whether seeking or reciting.

May rain water your familiar abode, which, had it not existed,

my heart would not have been a home for yearning.

He has not given love's affliction its rightful due—

a lovesick man whom passion besets, yet who steels himself.

A lover—sorrows have agreed to meet in his heart

if you fail to keep a tryst with him.

Why do you disapprove of my bewilderment at our parting,

when the yearning lover's brilliance is to be bewildered?

O my companion in Damascus, you are no companion of mine

unless you prepare a resting-place for sorrows.

Bring near the tall, well-broken she-camel, and send her far

in travel, as long as the road is smooth.

And toward the sons of Abd al-Karim she raced,

with the trot of an ostrich that saw darkness and sped on.

How many a moon they have brought to light, whose deeds protected

a moon and a noble deed that converses with Farqad!

Radiant amid terror, pouring forth bounty whenever

the mean, tightfisted man gives scantily and stints.

Whether one has found a pasture praiseworthy or condemned it,

I praise God, then I praise Ahmad.

He becomes an enemy to a friend if that friend comes

to chide him over praise, and a friend to foes.

I have exhausted my poetry on him, a man worthy of praise,

who has become so preeminent he almost exhausts nobility.

Blade-sharp in resolve for noble deeds, he has left

no honor today to pursue tomorrow.

    فيها تَسيرُ مُغَوِّراً أَو مُنجِدا

    You have excelled alone in the pursuit of lofty honors;

in their pursuit you travel through lowlands or highlands.

A wonder, that you are free of loneliness

at a height where you have always stood alone!

And I am a ransom, when the spears clash,

for you; and spears are your ransom against spears.

And may you remain safe, for ever unharmed remain

our hopes in you, so long as you are safe from death.

How often in battle you have brought a white day,

when war had brought a black day!

You charged: honor showed you no way of retreat

from battle, nor did your opponent find an opening against you.

You did not sheath the sword with which you were girded

until its blade itself longed to be sheathed.

Far from it! Glory does not stay far, even if distant,

from a seeker—especially one whose mount is generosity.

How can what you seek elude you, when

your two desires are only to give lavishly and be praised?

    وَلَقَد رَغِبتَ فَكُنتَ فيهِ أَزهَدا

    When you renounced, you renounced amassing wealth;

and indeed you desired, becoming still more detached from it.

Wealth, wherever you turn, is not safe

from your generosity's assault, whether you set things right or wreak ruin.

And surely you are nobler in origin than your gifts,

and your generosity is nobler in origin than your enemy.

May Tayy never lose you, for seldom

has your clan lacked a generous lord.
