O Abu Dulaf, no seeker of a favor remains

among the people but me, while the ground lies barren.

Does it please you that I returned from you disappointed,

though none has been known to be disappointed in your bounty,

and that I have turned praise into censure,

and an orator has risen to proclaim it throughout the world?

How can this be, when you are the noble, eminent man whose

bounty grants every people a share?

I stayed five months in your courtyard,

cast aside, where no south wind pours rain upon me.

So if I obtain what I hoped for from you, I am indeed

    deserving; otherwise, departure is near.
