أَباO father of بِشرٍBishr قَدِindeed اِستَفتَحتَyou have opened باباًa door
وَقَدand indeed أَتمَمتَهُyou have completed it إِلّاexcept for قَليلاa little
O Abu Bishr, you have opened a door,
and have all but completed it.
فَأَصبَحَso it became وَهوَand it is جَبّارٌa towering palm وَعَهديthough I recall
بِهِof it مُذsince أَشهُرٍmonths يُدعىit is called فَسيلاa palm sapling
Now it stands a towering palm, though I remember
it being called a sapling just months ago.
فَلاso not أَدريI know مَنِwho الأَعلىthe loftiest فِعالاًin deeds
وَمَنand who يَبنيbuilds العُلىglory عَرضاًin breadth وَطولاand in length
So I know not who is loftier in deeds,
and who builds glory in breadth and length:
أَمُعطِيَّis it my giver of الجَزيلِabundant bounty بِلاwithout اِمتِنانٍreminding of favors
بِهِof it أَمor مَنthe one who أَفَدتُI gained بِهِthrough him الجَزيلاabundant bounty
is it he who gives me bounty, without reminding me
of it, or he through whom I gained that bounty?
رَأَيتُكَI have seen you تَعرُكُyou wrestle with الحاجاتِneeds حَتّىuntil
تُعيدَyou render بِذاكَby that أَصعَبَهاthe hardest of them ذَلولاtame
I have seen you wrestle with needs until
you thereby make the hardest of them tame.
وَتُصرِخُand you aid مَنwhoever دَعاكَcalled upon you إِلىto المَعاليnoble deeds
بِياwith 'O' عَبدَservant of الحَميدِthe Praiseworthy وَياand O بَجيلاBajil
And you aid whoever calls you to noble deeds
with cries of 'O Abd al-Hamid!' and 'O Bajil!'
هُوَit is الشُكرُgratitude الجَسيمُweighty عَلىupon الأَعاديenemies
إِذاwhen شُكرُthe gratitude of الرِجالِmen غَداhas become ضَئيلاmeager
This is gratitude that weighs heavily upon enemies,
when men's gratitude has grown meager.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لَوif تَرىyou could see المَعروفَkindness وَجهاًas a face
إِذاًthen لَرَأَيتَهُyou would surely see it حَسَناًfair جَميلاbeautiful
For if you could see kindness as a face,
then you would see it fair and beautiful.
