My companions, halt—may I long be blessed with you as companions!

And fulfill for us a vow at her dwelling.

A dwelling where Time's hand seems, with varied

Forms of decay, to have spread books within it.

Where are those who dwelt in its precincts,

While Time poured its water in torrents?

When every bashful, pampered maiden dwelt there—

A youth's excuse if he went love-mad or fell in love.

Her sash hung loose upon her, though she filled

Anklet and bracelet with her limbs.

And when she swayed along, you thought her a branch,

Supple and fresh, toyed with by the east wind.

Affliction set before him a pampered beauty,

Made a target for his eye to behold.

She sought him out before parting, and did not

Leave him either liver or heart.

    Say to al-Juludi, whose hand

Carried away his troops' wealth in all directions:

    God granted you defeat when

The cords of death dragged hard at you.

    You met champions driving into

The press of battle lean, hollow-flanked steeds.

So you alighted in their midst, swaggering,

And there they served you spear-thrusts and blows.

    A guest—but I do not bid him

Welcome at his lodging, or a gracious reception.

There, where you meet the spear plunging into

    The kidneys' fluids, and the keen, cutting sword;

While horses sweep to right and left,

And death envelops east and west.

And white blades gleam in their palms

At early forenoon; you take them for shooting stars.

Then your eyes turned back, having seen

A sight that lodged terror in your breast.

And you were distracted from tanning hides by what

    Spread affliction and magnified disaster.

Cavalry came upon you; had you stood against them,

They would have seized your soul as plunder in battle.

Far from it! When you caught sight of them,

They draped you in a robe of hardship and anguish.

And I took them for black lions, or

Camels whose mangy breeding bulls charge.

From Adnan's people and their brothers,

    Qahtan—neither wavering nor shrinking back.

And you found your purpose against them a mount

Hard to ride, and their wood hard to dent.

And you cast your gaze about; it saw

In every land someone setting war ablaze.

And you were shielded by pitch-black night, whose

Darkness had cast veils over you.

So you traveled by night through deserts, crossing

Their rugged ground and open plains on pale camels.

And you left your troops as meat for the spears,

While white blades wrench their heads away.

Some slain, others captives together in irons,

    They await execution and crucifixion.

So thank the favors of a night that granted

You life, and the band that rode through it.

No—you can never give it its due thanks

Until you make it a lord for you all.
