Misfortunes have struck the valley bend of Urwiyya,
The vigour of youth has passed its zenith, as the ropes
and the ages have packed away the freshness of her encampment.
Of age's tent are bound. Time leaves upon my temples

The decay of the winding dunes undid your patience; there fluttered
The snows of years. Patience and calm, my friends,
through your mind a longing, when the sandy slope lay deserted.
Alone remain, when youth's fair companions all are gone.

Your tears hastened in the beloved's wake, ever since
Long, long our tears flowed, and our sorrow burned
the boughs and dunes departed from the dunes.
For the lost friend. But what avails our grief or yearning?

Though time and change exile me, yet I forget her not,
with no recourse but dripping, flowing tears.
For lone remembrance is my friend, my confidant.

Of noble birth, though she no noble lineage claimed.

this silver, have the bulky bowls passed around among them.
Now that the Caliph's power sustains the pillars
إِنَّindeed الأَسِنَّةَspearheads وَالماذِيَّand fine steel mail مُذsince كَثُراboth became abundant
إِنَّ الأَسِنَّةَ وَالماذِيَّ مُذ كَثُرا

فَلا الصَياصي لَها قَدرٌ وَلا اليَلَبُ
Since spearheads and fine steel mail have become abundant,
Of the faith, oh, let your strength support our art!
neither horns nor hide armor count for anything against them.
I sell my wares in thronged mart, but I see no buyers;
لاno نَجمَstar مِنamong مَعشَرٍa people إِلّاexcept وَهِمَّتُهُwhile its ambition
لا نَجمَ مِن مَعشَرٍ إِلّا وَهِمَّتُهُ

عَلَيكَ دائِرَةٌ يا أَيُّها القُطُبُ
No star among any people but has its ambition
I seek the mart of buyers, while no sellers throng.
circling around you, O pole star.
One land is green but dry; another wet but bare.
وَماand not ضَميرِيَmy inward thought فيin ذِكراكَremembering you مُشتَرَكٌis shared

وَلا طَريقي إِلى جَدواكَ مُنشَعِبُ
My inward thought of you is shared with no other,
Take our song, that lonely is on earth, and give it thus
nor does my road toward your bounty branch.
A place, from each strange, foreign thought and word redeemed,

I have a claim to your regard; but for what you respected and
When you shall pluck from every verse its faults.
made obligatory in guarding it, I would not have deemed it due.
Let earnest thought and trifling jest here

Indeed, in their days of Ignorance there was already
Blend themselves close; nobility and folly meet;
wondrous support for a claim, though not one like mine:
The ripened fruits alone cull from each line.

a bucket catching on an unfamiliar bucket, or
Be patron thou, for most of verse lacks all but flattery,
one tent rope entwining a firmly twisted tent rope.
Since noblest thoughts awhile must wait their turn.

The caliph's reign has made strong
the pillars of religion; let literature be strengthened through you.

Why do I see a brimming load of wares, yet see no
market, and why do I see a market with no wares?

One land has luxuriant grass, but no
water; another has water, but no grass.

Take it, ranging far across the earth, finding companionship
with every uncommon mind whenever it travels abroad.

In every rhyme within it, when harvested, there is
something of all that the wasting, ailing man gathers:

earnestness and jest are woven into its weft,
and nobility, folly, sorrows, and rapture.

Its luster is not drawn from the quiver of books;
and books have never ceased drawing from its sea.

Of noble lineage, its station is in the very heart of praise,
while most poetry is cast out, with no pedigree.
