سَقىmay water اللَهُGod مَنthe one whom أَهوىI love عَلىdespite بُعدِthe distance of نَأيِهِhis absence
وَإِعراضِهِand his turning away عَنّيfrom me وَطولِand the length of جَفائِهِhis estrangement
May God send rain upon the one I love, despite his distant absence,
God watered the one I love though he is far away
And his turning away from me, and his long estrangement.
And turned from me, prolonged has been his disdain
أَبىrefused اللَهُGod إِلّاexcept أَنthat كَلِفتُI became enamored بِحُبِّهِwith love for him
فَأَصبَحتُso I became فيهِconcerning him راضِياًcontent بِقَضائِهِwith His decree
God would have it no other way: I became enthralled by love for him,
God willed that I be burdened with love for him
So I became content with His decree concerning him.
So I became, regarding His decree, content
وَأَفرَدتُand I devoted عَينيmy eye بِالدُموعِto tears فَأَصبَحَتso it became
وَقَدand already غَصَّchoked مِنهاof it كُلُّevery جَفنٍeyelid بِمائِهِwith its water
And I devoted my eye to tears, so it came to be
And I cried till my eyes overflowed with tears
With each of its lids choked on its water.
Drenching both eyelids with their rain
فَإِنso if مِتُّI die مِنof وَجدٍlove's anguish بِهِfor him وَصَبابَةٍand yearning
فَكَمthen how many مِنof مُحِبٍّa lover ماتَdied قَبليbefore me بِدائِهِof his malady
So if I die of love's anguish for him and yearning,
If I die of passion for him and yearning
Then many a lover before me has died of his malady.
Many a lover before me died of his malady
