May death fold me away the day I revel in pleasure,

while Ahmad and Muhammad are absent from me.

May God repay the days of parting with reproach,

just as no day spent apart is praised.

Whenever a day passes with agonizing longing,

the morrow after it comes with crushing yearning.

So my long yearning for them has left nothing of me

but sorrows that keep returning within my breast.

My two dear friends, I have not let my gaze graze on delight,

nor has a hand of mine stretched toward pleasure.

Nor has my soul acquired a new friend,

so that the new friend might distract me from him.

    فَدوما عَلى العَهدِ الَّذي كُنتُ أَعهَدُ

    Nor have I departed from my pledge, which you both knew;

so both of you stand by the pledge I used to know.

For if you withdraw without me into companionship and pleasure,

then I am left alone with prolonged sorrow and longing.
