أَقلَقَdisturbed جَفنَthe eyelid العَينَينِof both eyes عَنfrom غُمُضِهits closing
أَقلَقَ جَفنَ العَينَينِ عَن غُمُضِه
وَشَدَّand bound هَذاthis الحَشاheart عَلىto مَضَضِهits burning pain
وَشَدَّ هَذا الحَشا عَلى مَضَضِه
It has kept the lids of both eyes from closing,
and bound this heart fast to its burning pain:
شَجاًgrief بِماat what عَنَّbefell لِلأَميرِto the emir أَبيAbū (father of) العَبّاal-ʿAbbā- (name continued)
شَجاً بِما عَنَّ لِلأَميرِ أَبي العَبّا
سِ-s (completes al-ʿAbbās) أَمسىbecame نَصباًa target لِمُعتَرِضِهfor what assails him
سِ أَمسى نَصباً لِمُعتَرِضِه
grief at what befell the emir Abū al-ʿAbbās,
who has become a target for what assails him—
لِباسِطِfor him who extends الباعِthe armspan رَحبِهِbroad in it واجِبِbinding الحَقِّthe due
لِباسِطِ الباعِ رَحبِهِ واجِبِ الحَقِّ
عَلىupon العالَمينَall peoples مُفتَرَضِهwhose due is obligatory
عَلى العالَمينَ مُفتَرَضِه
the open-handed, broad of reach, whose due is binding
upon all peoples, an ordained obligation;
مِنَone of الأُلىthose who نَستَجيرُwe seek refuge مِنfrom شَرَقِthe choking of الدَهTime (word continued)
مِنَ الأُلى نَستَجيرُ مِن شَرَقِ الدَه
رِcompletion of 'Time' بِهِمin them إِنif أَلَمَّit strikes أَوor جَرَضِهits choking anguish
رِ بِهِم إِن أَلَمَّ أَو جَرَضِه
one of those in whom we seek refuge from Time's choking,
should it strike, or from its strangling anguish.
صاغَهُمُfashioned them ذوthe Possessor of الجَلالِmajesty مِنfrom جَوهَرِthe substance of المَجglory (word continued)
صاغَهُمُ ذو الجَلالِ مِن جَوهَرِ المَج
دِcompletion of 'glory' وَصاغَand fashioned الأَنامَhumankind مِنfrom عَرَضِهits incidental qualities
دِ وَصاغَ الأَنامَ مِن عَرَضِه
The Lord of Majesty fashioned them from the substance of glory,
and fashioned humankind from its incidental qualities.
إِذاif رَمَواthey cast عُروَةًa loop إِلَيكَtoward you فَقَدthen indeed
إِذا رَمَوا عُروَةً إِلَيكَ فَقَد
أَتَيتَyou have reached حَوضَthe pool of الأَنامِhumankind مِنby فُرَضِهits access points
أَتَيتَ حَوضَ الأَنامِ مِن فُرَضِه
If they cast a loop toward you, then
you have reached mankind's pool by its access points.
سَهمٌan arrow مِنَfrom المُلكِkingship لاnot يُضَيِّعُهُlets it go to waste
سَهمٌ مِنَ المُلكِ لا يُضَيِّعُهُ
باديهِits launcher حَتّىuntil يَهتَزَّit quivers فيin غَرَضِهits target
باديهِ حَتّى يَهتَزَّ في غَرَضِه
An arrow of kingship, never allowed to stray
by its archer until it quivers in its target.
صِحَّتُهُhis health صِحَّةُthe health of الرَجاءِhope لَناfor us
صِحَّتُهُ صِحَّةُ الرَجاءِ لَنا
فيin حينِthe time of مُلتاثِهِits troubled state وَمُنتَقَضِهand its unraveling
في حينِ مُلتاثِهِ وَمُنتَقَضِه
His health is the health of our hope,
when that hope is troubled and coming undone.
وَإِنand if يَجِدhe experiences عِلَّةًan illness نُعَمُّwe are all afflicted بِهاby it
وَإِن يَجِد عِلَّةً نُعَمُّ بِها
حَتّىso that تَراناyou see us نُعادُwe are visited as patients مِنbecause of مَرَضِهhis illness
حَتّى تَرانا نُعادُ مِن مَرَضِه
And if he suffers an illness, we are all afflicted by it,
so that you see us visited as patients because of his illness.
