أَفيكُمis there among you? فَتىًa youth حَيٌّliving فَيُخبِرُنيso he may tell me عَنّيabout me
بِماbecause of what شَرِبَتhas drunk مَشروبَةُthe draught of الراحِwine مِنof ذِهنيmy mind
Is there a living youth among you to tell me who I am,
given how much of my mind the draught of wine has drunk?
غَدَتit became وَهيَwhile it أَولىmore entitled مِنthan فُؤاديmy heart بِعَزمَتيto my resolve
وَرُحتُand I became بِماto what فيin الدِنِّthe wine-jar أَولىmore entitled مِنَthan الدِنِّthe wine-jar
It came to have more claim on my resolve than my own heart,
and I, more claim to the wine-jar's contents than the jar itself.
لَقَدindeed تَرَكَتنيhas left me كَأسُهاits cup وَحَقيقَتيand my reality
مُحالٌan impossibility وَحَقٌّand the truth مِنof فِعالِيَmy deeds كَالظَنِّlike conjecture
Its cup has indeed left me with my very reality
an impossibility, and the truth of my deeds like conjecture.
هِيَit اِختَدَعَتنيdeceived me وَالغَمامُand the clouds وَلَمand not أَكُنI was
بِأَوَّلَthe first مَنwho أَهدىoffered التَغافُلَwillful heedlessness لِلدَجنِto the clouded day
It deceived me, as did the clouds; and I was not
the first to offer willful heedlessness to a clouded day.
إِذاwhenever اِشتَعَلَتblazed فيin الطاسِthe bowl وَالكاسِand the cup نارُهاits fire

Whenever its fire blazed in bowl and cup,
I warmed myself at it, from the palms of one tender and supple,

ذَكَرتُI recalled بِهاthrough it أَيّامَthe days of يوسُفَJoseph فيin الحُسنِbeauty
youth's companion, with a charm upon his cheeks
that made me recall Joseph's days of beauty.
إِذاwhen نَحنُwe أَومَأناwe beckoned إِلَيهِto him أَدارَهاhe passed it round
سُلافاًchoice wine كَماءِlike the water of الجَفنِthe eyelid وَهيَthough it مِنَfrom الجِفنِthe vine
When we beckoned to him, he passed it round:
choice wine like tears from the eyelid, though it came from the vine.
تُقَلِّبُit turns روحَthe spirit of المَرءِa man فيin كُلِّevery وِجهَةٍdirection
وَتَدخُلُand it enters مِنهُof him حَيثُwherever شاءَتit wishes بِلاwithout إِذنِpermission
It turns a man's spirit in every direction
and enters him wherever it pleases, without leave.
وَمُسمِعُناand our musician طَفلُtender الأَنامِلِof fingertips عِندَهُwith him
لَناfor us كُلُّevery نَوعٍkind مِنof قِرىa feast for العَينِthe eye وَالأُذنِand the ear
And our musician, tender-fingered, has
for us every kind of feast for eye and ear.
لَناfor us وَتَرٌa string مِنهُfrom him إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) اِستَحَثَّهُhe spurs it on
فَصيحٌeloquent وَلَحنٌand a melody فيin أَمانٍsafety مِنَfrom اللَحنِerror
For us his string, whenever he spurs it on,
is eloquent, and his melody is safe from error.
وَفيand in رَوضَةٍa garden نَبتِيَّةٍverdant صَبَغَتdyed لَهاfor it

And in a verdant garden, whose blossoms dyed
its streams with the tint of oil,
ظَلِلناwe spent the day بِهاin it فيin جَنَّةٍa paradise غابَvanished نَحسُهاits ill fortune

we spent the day there in a paradise whose ill fortune had vanished;
its gardens remind us of the Garden of Eden.
نَعِمناwe lived in bliss بِهاin it فيin بَيتِthe house of أَروَعَa splendid man ماجِدٍnoble
مِنَfrom among القَومِthe people آبٍaverse لِلدَناءَةِto baseness وَالأَفنِand folly
We lived in bliss there in the house of a splendid, noble man,
one of the people, scorning baseness and folly:
فَتىًa youth شُقَّwas cleft مِنfrom عودِthe stock of المَحامِدِvirtues عودُهُhis stock
كَماjust as اِشتَقَّderived مُسموهُthose who named him لَهُfor him اِسماًa name مِنَfrom الحُسنِbeauty
a youth whose stock was cleft from the stock of virtues,
just as those who named him derived his name from beauty.
