I turned my affairs over, at the outset and at the end,

and schooled myself in both conditions, injustice and moderation.

So I never opened my mouth without gagging it,

nor extended my hand without drawing it back.

I have no fault except the radiant verses I sent forth

east and west, and the knots of verse I tied fast:

a fragrance carried by poetry, refined

by thought that ranges as the spirit ranges through the body.

Hours of gratitude are nourished by the lasting life it gives,

so their lifetimes are longer than eternity.

When their darkness surrounded me, I encompassed it

in my heart, whose lamp blazes whenever I journey by its light at night.

I mixed up my life and my peers for you and through you,

until I was left as though I were not of Udad's line.

Then you cast aside my kinship ties and my bond,

until I imagined I belonged to Banu Asad.

Then I turned to my soul, to coax its affection

toward others besides you, but it warmed to no one.

And praise of one unworthy of praise I deem

a limb severed from my heart and my liver.

A people: when the eyes of hopes come to them,

they return kohl-lined with the smarting of eye inflammation.

So the sight of poetry is more hateful in their eyes

and in their breasts than the sight of a lion.

You see none but one unfolded upon prior standing,

among those who speak, or one folded around envy.

Speak a decisive word whose judgment takes effect

in withholding, if withholding awaits me, or in bounty,

through which my support grows secure, or my arm becomes impregnable,

or my goal draws near to me, or my crookedness is straightened.

Or that one whose roughness has so often led,

among affairs, to its smooth, level road.

If you have patience and endurance in delaying,

I have no patience or endurance when it comes to censure.

So say, 'Back with you, far removed and distant!'

For, where you are concerned, I deserve remoteness and distance.
