I shall thank the two sons of Wahb for the gift that
is affection, which they both preserved by tending it well.
عَفاءٌruin عَلىupon دَهياءَa dire calamity كاناthey both were إِزاءَهاfacing it
وَنِكلٌand a fetter لِداجيfor dark الخَطبِadversity يَعتَوِرانِهِthey assail it in turn
Ruin upon any dire calamity they both stood against,
and a fetter for dark adversity they assail in turn.
تَدَفَّقتُماyou both overflowed مِنfrom طَلِّthe drizzle of مُزنٍrainclouds وَوَبلِهِand their downpour
وَمِنand from شَرخِthe first bloom of مَعروفٍkindness وَمِنand from عُنفُوانِهِits youthful vigor
You both overflowed with rainclouds’ drizzle and downpour,
and with kindness in its first bloom and youthful vigor.
وَهَلand is there ليfor me غَداةَon the morning of السَبقِthe race عُذرٌan excuse وَأَنتُماwhile you both
بِحَيثُin a place where تَرىsee عَينايَmy two eyes يَومَon the day of رِهانِهِits wagered contest
Have I any excuse on the morning of the race, when you both
are within my sight on the day of the contest?
رَأَيتُكُماI saw you both مِنagainst رَيبِthe reversals of دَهرِيَmy time هَضبَةًa mountain
وَمازُلتُماand you both have remained لازِلتُماmay you both ever remain مِنamong رِعانِهِits peaks
I found you both a mountain against my time’s reversals,
and you have always been—may you ever remain—among its peaks.
فَأَصبَحَso it became ليfor me تَحتَbeneath الجِرانِthe neck فَريسَةًprey
وَلَولاكُماand but for you both أَصبَحتُI would have been تَحتَbeneath جِرانِهِits neck
So it became my prey beneath my neck,
and but for you both, I would have been beneath its neck.
وَمَلَّكتُمانيand you both gave me mastery of صَعبَةًan unruly she-camel وَخِشاشَهاand her nose-peg
وَأَمكَنتُماand you both gave me power مِنover طامِحٍa headstrong horse وَعِنانِهِand its reins
And you both gave me mastery of an unruly she-camel and her nose-peg,
and power over a headstrong horse and its reins.
لَئِنthough رُمتُI sought أَمراًa goal غِبتُماyou both were absent عِندَat بِكرِهِits outset
لَقَدindeed سَرَّنيdelighted me فِعلاكُماyour two deeds فيin عَوانِهِits later stage
Though, when I sought a goal, you both were absent at its outset,
your two deeds indeed delighted me in its later course.
وَماand what خَيرُgood is بَرقٍlightning لاحَflashed فيat غَيرِother than وَقتِهِits proper time
وَوادٍand a valley غَداbecame مَلآنَfull قَبلَbefore أَوانِهِits due time
And what good is lightning flashing out of season,
and a valley brimming before its time?
تَلَطَّفتُماyou both dealt gently لِلدَهرِwith Time حَتّىuntil أَجابَنيit answered me
وَقَدthough already أَزمَنتَhad crippled رِجليmy leg هَناتُthe ills of زَمانِهِits days
You both coaxed Time until it answered me,
though the ills of its days had crippled my leg.
وَمازِلتُماand you both have remained مِنof نَبعِهِits hard bow-wood إِنif عُجِمتُماyou both are tested
لِضَيمٍby oppression وَعِندَand in الجودِgenerosity مِنof خَيزُرانِهِits bamboo
You both have always been its hard nabʿ-wood when tested
by oppression, and in generosity, its supple bamboo.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَصبَحتُماyou both furnished (text reads: became) العُرفَKindness صاحِباًa companion
لَهُhe has مِقوَلٌan eloquent tongue نُعماbounty كَماyour (apparently a separated dual suffix) فيin ضَمانِهِits keeping
By my life, you both have indeed given Kindness a companion,
whose eloquent tongue holds your bounty in trust.
وَيَأخُذُand he receives مِنfrom أَيديكُماthe hands of you both وَهَواكُماand the affection of you both
فَلاso no عَجَبٌwonder أَنthat تَأخُذاyou both receive مِنfrom لِسانِهِhis tongue
He receives from your hands and your affection,
so no wonder you both receive from his tongue.
