I saw in sleep that reconciliation had failed,

And that my lord, after closeness, had grown distant.

Why did I not die of sorrow? Why did I not die of grief?

Why did I not die of anguish? Why did I not die of heartache?

I nearly swore—though that would be excessive—

Never to taste sleep again after that.

Sighs beyond my endurance have brought me

To complain of sleep, while others complain of sleeplessness.
