وَأَبصَرَ ذِلَّتي فَزَها
He dallied, and lent me infatuation;
He amused himself and lent me lovesick anguish;
he saw my abasement and grew proud.
And saw my abasement, so he grew proud.

He has a face by which he is exalted;
He has a face through which he is exalted;
I have burning pangs by which I am brought low.
And I have burning pangs through which I am humbled.

A subtle grace, through which were joined
Delicate are his charms, to which were joined
the beauties of his two cheeks.
The charms of his two cheeks.

أُلاحِظُ حُسنَ وَجنَتِهِ
فَتَجرَحُنيso it wounds me وَأَجرَحُهاand I wound it
فَتَجرَحُني وَأَجرَحُها
I gaze upon the beauty of his cheek,
I glance at the beauty of his cheek;
and it wounds me, while I wound it.
So it wounds me, and I wound it.
