وَلَن تَجودَ بِهِ يا كَلبُ يا كَلِبُ
Are sweeter and more delightful than bounty you bestow—
And you will never bestow it, O dog, O rabid one!

You gave me cause to complain; then, when I complained of you,
You grew angry—may that wrath and anger endure!

Sons of Lahīʿah, what have I to do with you,
While the lands offer ample space and room to roam?

You lie! No man of noble standing turns away,
Nor any man of culture, from a man of culture.

I am indeed full of wonder at this, and I repeat it
Concerning you—and my wonder at your reproach is itself a wonder.

ʿAyyāsh, you have no desire for a noble deed,
Nor does a noble deed have any desire for a base man.

O you, most prolific of men in promises stuffed with broken faith,
And most prolific of men in speech that is all lies!
ظَلِلتَyou kept تَنتَهِبُplundering الدُنياthe world وَزُخرُفَهاand its finery

وَظَلَّand kept عِرضُكَyour reputation عِرضُreputation السوءِof wickedness يُنتَهَبُbeing plundered
وَظَلَّ عِرضُكَ عِرضُ السوءِ يُنتَهَبُ
You kept plundering the world and its finery,
While your reputation, a vile reputation, kept being plundered.
