    Cut my cords, for I have grown weary of you,

    and let me go from your grasp wherever you please.

    حَسبُكَ ما كُنتَ لي وَكُنتُ لَكا

    I do not wish you to be a home for me;

    enough that you were mine, and I was yours.

    فَاِطلُب خَليلاً سِوايَ مُشتَرِكا

    You are many-colored, a partner to many;

    so seek another intimate besides me—one willing to share.

    I have obtained from you what you were stingy with,

    yet gained no benefit and reached no goal.

    سالَ بِكَ السَيلُ حَيثُما سَلَكا

    So go wherever you please, set loose;

    may the torrent carry you wherever it courses.

    You have died while living, by a beard that has sprouted

    upon you—you were an angel before it.

    When you see that on a youth there has sprouted

    a hair upon his cheek, then he has perished.
