وَاللَهِby God لَوif تَدريyou know بِماof what أَلقىI endure
لَجَزِعتَyou would surely be distressed أَنto تَتَجاوَزَyou overstep الحَقّاwhat is right
By God, if you knew what I endure,
By God, if you knew what I endure
you would dread overstepping what is right.
You would be too upset to deny the truth
بيafflicting me فَوقَbeyond ماwhat تَلقىshe suffers بِواحِدِهاfor her only child
أُمٌّa mother تَراهُshe sees him لِجَنبِهاbeside her مُلقىcast down
My anguish exceeds that felt for her only child
I suffer more than words can convey
by a mother who sees him lying beside her,
A mother who sees her child lying dead
تَبكيshe weeps لِمَنهوشٍfor one bitten تَنَيَّبَهُsank its fangs into him
صِلٌّan asp فَماso he is not يُرجىhoped to recover وَلاnor يُرقىtreated with healing charms
weeping for one bitten by the fangs
Crying for one slain unjustly
of an asp—no hope for him, nor is he treated with healing charms.
A wailing that brings no hope or relief
فَاِرحَمso have mercy شَقِيّاًa wretched man فيin هَواكَlove for you فَماfor he does not
يَبغيhe seeks وَإِنand even if أَعتَقتَهُyou set him free عِتقاfreedom
So pity a wretched man in love with you, for he does not
So have mercy on a wretch in love with you
seek freedom, even if you set him free.
He seeks only freedom though you refuse to free him
