Beauty has arrayed its jewels upon your cheeks,

And there the apple has left its red hue.

And all beauty has its beginning in your eyes,

Since Harut drew up his army in your eyes.

Your cheek was long radiant and pure white,

But since the gaze took hold there, it has dyed it with safflower.

My heart is captive in the hands of a coquettish young gazelle,

Who kills it and, whenever he wishes, brings it back to life.
