صَبراًbe patient عَلىwith المَطلِdelay ماso long as لَمnot يَتلُهُfollows it الكَذِبُfalsehood
فَلِلخُطوبِfor, to misfortunes belong إِذاif سامَحتَهاyou bear with them عُقَبُendings
Bear delay patiently, so long as falsehood does not follow it;
Patience with what is delayed, as long as it is not marred by lies,
For misfortunes, if you bear with them, have their endings.
For hardships, when endured, are followed by comfort.
عَلىupon المَقاديرِfate's decrees لَومٌblame إِنif رُميتُI am charged بِهِwith it
مِنby عادِلٍa just man وَعَلَيَّand upon me السَعيُstriving وَالطَلَبُand seeking
Blame rests with fate, if I am charged with it
Blaming fate, though blamed by the just, is vain,
By a just man; my duty is to strive and seek.
While striving and seeking rest with me.
ياO أَيُّهاyou المَلِكُthe king النائيdistant بِرُؤيَتِهِin seeing him
وَجودُهُand his bounty لِمُرَجّيfor one hoping for جودِهِhis bounty كَثِبُnear
O king who is distant from sight,
O King, unseen, whose generosity
Yet whose bounty is near to those who hope for his bounty.
Is hoped for by those seeking your grace.
لَيسَis not الحِجابُthe veil بِمُقصٍdriving away عَنكَfrom you ليfor me أَمَلاًa hope
إِنَّindeed السَماءَthe sky تُرَجّىis hoped for حينَwhen تَحتَجِبُis veiled
The veil does not turn my hope away from you;
You are not veiled from me, though my hopes seem blocked,
Indeed, the sky is looked to with hope when it is veiled.
For the sky is hoped for when clouds mass.
ماnot دونَapart from بابِكَyour door ليfor me بابٌa door أَلوذُI seek refuge بِهِat it
وَلاnor وَراءَكَbeyond you ليfor me مَثوىًa dwelling وَمُطَّلَبُand a goal
Apart from your door, I have no door at which to seek refuge;
Nothing below your door is a door for me,
Nor beyond you have I any dwelling or goal.
No shelter or goal beyond You I seek.
ياO خَيرَbest مَنthose whom سَمِعَتhas heard أُذنٌan ear بِهِof him وَرَأَتand has seen
عَينٌan eye وَمَنand those whom وَرَدَتhave come to أَبوابَهُhis doors العَرَبُthe Arabs
O best of those heard of by an ear and seen
O best of those whose ears have heard, whose eyes have seen,
By an eye, and of those whose doors the Arabs have visited.
And whose door the Arabs have frequented.
أَمّاas for السُكوتُsilence فَمَطوِيٌّthen it is folded عَلىaround عِدَةٍa promise
وَفيand in كَلامِكَyour speech غُرُّthe choicest المالِwealth يُنتَهَبُis plundered
As for silence, it is folded around a promise;
Silence hides feelings beyond limit,
And in your speech, the choicest wealth is plundered.
While in your words, riches flow, freely grabbed.
