نَفَسٌ يَحتَثُّهُ نَفَسُ
وَدُموعٌand tears لَيسَnot تَحتَبِسُare held back
وَدُموعٌ لَيسَ تَحتَبِسُ
A breath urged on by another,
A soul stirred by a soul,
And tears that are not held back,
And tears that do not hold back,
وَمَغانٍand abodes لِلكَرىfor sleep دُثُرٌruined
وَمَغانٍ لِلكَرى دُثُرٌ
عُطُلٌbare مِنof عَهدِهِits former presence دُرُسُeffaced
عُطُلٌ مِن عَهدِهِ دُرُسُ
And sleep's ruined abodes,
Songs are a cloak for anguish,
Bare of its former presence, effaced,
Neglected since time immemorial.

Have revealed what I used to conceal—
What I used to conceal has become public,
Mute, yet speaking of love.
Mute women speak of passion.
