1. عندي للأكل إذا

    ما قمت للتسحر

    I have for food, when

    I rise for the predawn meal,

  2. ملتوتة بسمنها

    وسمسم مقشر

    A dish mixed with its ghee,

    And hulled sesame,

  3. مثل البدور الطا

    لعات في صدور الاشهر

    Like the full moons ris-

    ing at the beginnings of the months,

  4. أو أوجه الترك إذا

    أثر فيها الجدري

    Or the faces of Turks when

    Smallpox has left its marks on them.
