My love is for you, O son of the blessed tree

through which God spoke to His interlocutor among the messengers.

If it is joined to the udder’s offspring after its weaving,

and after time has wrung out the weariness within it,

you see silver palms and fingers

bearing pitch-black dye that has not faded.

And you find among them Roman faces, topped with

the Zanj’s curly hair, or the pupils of eyes.

When the two come together for me, I have no inclination toward

the choicest kinds of cooked food, nor do I care.

Two companions, opposites—night’s darkness and morning light together—

a short handspan of ground, or less, contains them both.

So leave me to two intimates: this one, the night’s radiance

in purity upon the table’s surface; and that one, dusk.

This one is like a cheek marked by bites,

and that one like a pitch-black sidelock draped over it.
