وواضعة خدها في الصعيد

وواضعة خدها في الصعيد

لأربابها عندها حرمة

And one who lays her cheek upon the earth,

With her cheek resting on the ground

whose masters she holds in reverence:

She has dignity for her masters

نسيجة بنت جلود النعاج

بغير سداة ولا لحمة

بغير سداة ولا لحمة

a woven thing, daughter of the hides of ewes,

Made of sheepskins

with neither warp nor weft.

With no masters or meat

تمد على الرق رق الرمال

تمد على الرق رق الرمال

وتوفي على الحر في النعمة

وتوفي على الحر في النعمة

She spreads a sandy expanse over the hard ground,

She stretches her neck over the sand

and surpasses the freeborn in luxurious ease.

And is content with bounty in the heat

ويعمر ذا البيت منها غمام

ويعمر ذا البيت منها غمام

به شهبة خالطت أدمه

به شهبة خالطت أدمه

A cloud from her fills this house,

This house is inhabited by a cloud

with grayness mingled into its tawny hue.

In it a flame mixed with smoke

متاع لمن كان ذا خلة

متاع لمن كان ذا خلة

فقيرا ومن كان ذا نعمة

فقيرا ومن كان ذا نعمة

A useful possession for anyone in need,

A belonging for whoever had nothing

poor, and for anyone living in plenty.

And whoever had bounty
