هَزيلاً وَبَعضُ الآئِبينَ سَمينُ
The daughter of al-Bakri reproaches me when I return to her,
The daughter of Al-Bikri blames me when I pine for her,
Gaunt, while some who return are fat.
Though some saddened are stout and I am lean.
وَقالَتand she said لَحاكَmay He curse you اللَهُGod تَستَحسِنُyou deem good العَراstaying away

عَن الدارِ إِنَّ النائِباتِ فُنونُ
And she said, 'God curse you! You approve of staying away
“May God assail you! You admire the roe
From home; misfortunes come in many forms,
When you are far from home. Sorrows have kinds.”
وَحَولَكَand around you إِخوانٌfriends كِرامٌnoble لَهُمthey have غِنىًwealth

فَقُلتُ لِإِخواني الكِرامُ عُيونُ
And around you are noble friends who have wealth.'
And you have noble brothers, rich men all;
So I said, 'My noble friends have eyes.
I said: “My noble brothers are my eyes.”

Let me die before settling in a dwelling
“Let me die before some mansion I must seize
Where those who beg are met with furrowed brows.
That lowers faces of the applicants.”

With my wealth I shall ransom my face's luster, for I
“I will redeem my face’s water with my money,
Jealously guard the dew of modesty it holds.'
For it holds the water of shyness within.”
