أَأُنبَزُAm I branded مَجنوناًmad إِذاwhen جُدتُI gave generously بِالَّذيwith what
مَلَكتُI owned وَإِنand if دافَعتُI defended عَنهُon its behalf فَعاقِلُthen I am sane
Am I branded mad when I give generously of what
I own, yet deemed sane if I defend it?

So may they persist in the falsehood with which they are charged,
and may I persist in giving whenever a supplicant comes.

I refuse, and men refuse it for me—men jealously protective
of glory, whom Tamim and Wa'il claim as their descendants.
