نسيمُa breeze الصباthe east wind منfrom حيثُwhere يَطّلِعُrises الفجرُthe dawn
Whenever I say, 'Now is the time to forget,' I am stirred
When I say this as the morning breeze stirs me,
by the east wind's breeze from where the dawn breaks.
From where the dawn emerges, it excites me,
وانّيand indeed I لَتَعْرونيsurely overtakes me لذِكراكِat remembering you فَتْرةٌa spell of weakness
كَماjust as انْتَفَضَshook itself العُصفورُthe sparrow بَلّلهُsoaked it القَطْرthe rain
And at the thought of you, a spell of weakness surely overtakes me,
And I am weakened by the memory of you for a while,
as a sparrow shakes itself when the rain has soaked it.
As a sparrow trembles, wetted by the rain,
I kept away from you حتّىuntil قيلit was said لاnot يَعْرِفُhe knows الهوىlove
وزُرْتُكand I visited you حتىuntil قيلit was said ليسthere is not لهfor him صبرpatience
I kept away from you until it was said, 'He knows no love';
I shunned you until it was said, "He knows not love,"
and I visited you until it was said, 'He has no patience.'
And I visited you until it was said, "He has no patience."

You spoke truly: I am the lovesick one, afflicted
You spoke truly - I am the afflicted lover
by the torments of love that has possessed the heart—or by sorcery.
Whose heart is stirred by the whispers of love or magic,
أماindeed والذيby Him who أبكىcaused weeping وأضْحَكَand caused laughter والذيand He who

Indeed, by Him who brings tears and laughter, and who
By Him who makes me laugh and cry, who gives
brings death and life, and whose command is supreme:
Life and death, and whose command is obeyed,
لقدindeed تَركَتْنيshe has left me أحْسُدُI envy الوحشَwild creatures أنbecause أرىI see
ألِفَيْنِtwo loving mates منهاamong them لاnot يَروعُهماfrightens them both النّفْرalarm
she has indeed left me envying wild creatures, for I see
You left me envying the wilderness when I see
two loving mates among them, untroubled by alarm.
A pair of beasts not startled by people,
فياso, O هجرَestrangement ليليLayla قدindeed بلغتَyou have reached بِيَwith me المَدىthe furthest limit
وزِدتّand you have gone further علىbeyond ماwhat لمnot يكنhad بَلَغreached الهجرestrangement
So, O estrangement from Layla, you have brought me to the limit,
Oh, Laila's abandonment, you have taken me far,
and gone beyond anything estrangement had ever reached.
And exceeded what abandonment had not reached before,
وياand O حبَّهاlove of her زِدْنيgive me more جَوىًburning anguish ليلةٍa night
وياand O سَلوةَsolace الأيّامِthe days مَوْعِدُكِyour appointed time الحَشْرthe Resurrection
And O love of her, increase my anguish for a night;
And oh, love for her, give me on a night
and O solace of days, your appointed time is the Resurrection.
More passion, oh joy of my days, till we meet at the Gathering,
عجبتُI marvelled لِسَعْيِat the striving of الدهرِTime بينيbetween me وبينهاand between her
فلمّاbut when انقضىended ماwhat بينَناbetween us سكنgrew still الدهرTime
I marvelled at Time's efforts to come between me and her;
I wonder at the striving of Time between me and her,
but when what was between us ended, Time grew still.
When what was between us had passed, Time was still,
وأنّيand indeed I لآتيهاI surely come to her وفيwhile in النفسthe soul هَجْرُهاforsaking her
بَتاتاًirrevocably لأُخرىuntil the end of الدهرtime ماas long as وَضَحgrew bright الفجرthe dawn
And indeed I come to her, intent on forsaking her
And I would come to her with abandonment in my soul
for good, till the end of time, as long as dawn breaks.
Suddenly, to surprise Time before dawn had cleared,
فماbut not هوit إلاّexcept أنthat أراهاI see her فُجاءةًunexpectedly
فأبُهْتُthen I am dumbfounded لاno عُرْفٌrecognition لَدَيّwith me ولاnor نُكْرdenial
Yet I have only to see her unexpectedly,
So that I was confused, neither recognizing nor known,
and I am dumbfounded, with neither recognition nor denial in me.
My hand almost withers when I touch her,
تكادalmost يديmy hand تَنْدَىgrows dewy ماwhen لمستُهاI touch her
ويَنْبِتُand sprouts فيin أطرافِهاits fingertips الورقُleaves الحُضْرgreen (apparently intended)
My hand almost grows dewy when I touch her,
And leaves grow from its fingertips,
and green leaves sprout at its fingertips.
