1. ليس لبس الطيالس

    من لباس الفوارس

    Wearing mantles is not

    the garb of horsemen.

  2. لا ولا حومة الوغى

    كصدور المجالس

    No, nor is the thick of battle

    like the seats of honor in assemblies.

  3. ضرب أوتار نفنف

    غير ضرب القوانس

    Striking Nafnaf’s strings

    is unlike striking helmet-crests.

  4. وظهور الجياد غير

    ظهور الطنافس

    And the backs of steeds are unlike

    the surfaces of carpets.

  5. ليس من مارس الحروب

    كمن لهم يمارس

    One who has experienced wars is not

    like one who strives on their behalf.

  6. بأبي غرس فتية

    من كرام المغارس

    My father be ransom for a crop of young men,

    from noble planting grounds:

  7. فتية من بني المغيرة

    شم المعاطس

    young men of Banu al-Mughira,

    high-bridged of nose.

  8. يطعمون السديف في

    كل شهباء دامس

    They serve camel-hump fat on

    every frosty, pitch-dark night,

  9. في جفان كأنها

    من جفان العرائس

    in large bowls, as though they were

    among the bowls of brides.

  10. ويخوضون باللواء دماء

    الأبالس

    And, bearing the banner, they wade through the blood

    of devils.

  11. ثم يمشون في

    السنور مشي العنابس

    Then they stride in

    armor, with the gait of lions.

  12. نحن خير الأنام

    عند قياس المقايس

    We are the best of humankind

    in the comparer’s reckoning.
