حدق الاجال آجال

والهوى للمرء قتال

The eyes of the wild cattle are death,

And passion is a person's slayer.

والهوى صعب مراكبه

وركوب الصعب أهوال

And passion's mounts are unruly,

And riding the unruly brings terrors.

ليس من شكلي فاشبهه

دعبل والناس اشكال

Not of my kind, that I should resemble him,

Is Diʿbil; people are of different kinds.

أملي في التاج البسه

وله في الشعر آمال

My hope is to wear the crown,

And his hopes lie in poetry.

ليس من يسمو به حسب

مثل مني سمو به مال

One whom ancestral honor raises is not

Like one whom wealth raises (reading an apparent spacing error).
