After fifty years, has his youthful folly returned?

Oh, would that what returned of it today had not returned!

كر الجديدان في أيامه الجدد

And what do the eyes of wide-eyed women want of a man

Over whose fresh days the twin renewers—night and day—have repeatedly passed?

أبدى سرائره وجداً بغانية

ولو اطاع مشيب الرأس لم يجد

ولو اطاع مشيب الرأس لم يجد

He revealed his secrets in yearning for a beautiful woman;

And had he heeded his graying head, he would not have yearned.

واستمطرت عبرات العين منزلة

لم يبق منها سوى الآري والوتد

لم يبق منها سوى الآري والوتد

And a dwelling called down the eye's tears like rain,

Of which nothing remained but the tethering stake and tent peg.

وما بكاؤك داراً لا أنيس بها

إلا الخواضب من حيطانها الربد

إلا الخواضب من حيطانها الربد

And why do you weep for a dwelling with no companion in it

Except red-legged ostriches among its dusky walls?

لدعهل وطرٌ في كل فاحشة

لو باد لؤم بنى قحطان لم يبد

Da‘hal craves every obscenity;

If the baseness of Qahtan's sons perished, he would not perish.

ولي قواف إذا أنزلتها بلداً

ولي قواف إذا أنزلتها بلداً

طارت بهن شياطيي إلى بلد

طارت بهن شياطيي إلى بلد

And I have rhymes that, when I set them down in one land,

My devils fly with them to another land.

لم ينج من خيرها أو شرها أحد

فاحذر شآبيها إن كنت من أحد

فاحذر شآبيها إن كنت من أحد

No one has escaped their good or their evil.

So beware their downpours, if you are anybody at all.

إن الطرماح نالته صواعقها

في ظلمة القهر بين الهام والصرد

في ظلمة القهر بين الهام والصرد

Indeed, their thunderbolts struck al-Tirimmah

In the gloom of oppression, amid owls and shrikes.

وأنت أولى بها أن كنت وارثه

فابعد وجهدك ان تنجو على البعد

فابعد وجهدك ان تنجو على البعد

And you deserve them more, if you are his heir;

So go far away; your utmost is to escape, even at a distance.

تهجو نزاراً بها ان كنت وارثه

وتنتمي في أناس حاكة البرد

وتنتمي في أناس حاكة البرد

You lampoon Nizar with them, if you are his heir,

And claim descent among people who weave striped cloaks.

إنى إذا رجل دبت عقاربه

سقيتهُ سم حياتي فلم يعد

سقيتهُ سم حياتي فلم يعد

Indeed, when a man's scorpions creep forth,

I make him drink my serpents' venom, and he does not return.

زهاني أزدك هوانا أنت موضعه

زهاني أزدك هوانا أنت موضعه

ومن يزيد إذا ما نحن لم نزد

ومن يزيد إذا ما نحن لم نزد

Your Azd scorned me with contempt that rightly belongs to you;

And who will add more, if we do not?

لو كنت متئداً فيما تلفقه

لكان حظك منه حظ متئد

لكان حظك منه حظ متئد

Had you been cautious in what you cobble together,

Your share of it would have been a cautious man's share.

لو كنت معتمداً منه على ثقة

من المكارم قلنا طول معتمد

من المكارم قلنا طول معتمد

Had your reliance on it rested securely

On noble deeds, we would have said: 'Ample ground to rely on.'

لقد تقلدت امرا لست نائله

بلا ولي ولا مولى ولا عضد

بلا ولي ولا مولى ولا عضد

You have indeed taken on a task you cannot accomplish,

Without an ally, a patron, or a supporting arm.

وقد رميت بياض الصبح تحسبه

وقد رميت بياض الصبح تحسبه

بياض بطنك من لؤم ومن نكد

بياض بطنك من لؤم ومن نكد

And you have shot at dawn's whiteness, thinking it

Your belly's whiteness, out of baseness and spite.

لا توعدني بقوم انت ناصرهم

واقعد فإنك نومان من القعد

واقعد فإنك نومان من القعد

Do not threaten me with a people whose champion you are;

And sit down, for you are a sleepyhead among the idlers.

للّه معتصم باللّه طاعته

قضية من قضايا الواحد الصمد

قضية من قضايا الواحد الصمد

To God belongs Mu‘tasim bi-llah; obedience to him

Is one of the decrees of the One, the Self-Sufficient.

اصبر لها صبر أقوام نفوسهم

اصبر لها صبر أقوام نفوسهم

لا تستريح إلى عقل ولا قود

لا تستريح إلى عقل ولا قود

Endure it with the endurance of people whose souls

Find no rest in blood money or retaliatory killing.
