I despaired of the gift, O Umm Amr,

on the morning when they attacked me at al-Janab.

So despair of your friend, and then despair,

at midmorning on the day of al-Uhathth, of returning.

Cries summon Kahil and Amr around me,

and they are like fierce hunting hounds.

They are served the morning draught at Dhu Murakh,

and the rear of the company is beneath a thicket’s blaze.

So among us is a band who are no defenders,

nor do they outstrip us in departing.

And among us is another band of defenders,

like the boiling of a pot stoked with kindling.

And among us is another band, swift,

whom the wind swept along like swaying sanan [term unclear as written].
