وَوَاللهِand by God ماnot عارَضْتُI challenged جودَكَyour generosity ساعَةًfor a moment
وَوَاللهِ ما عارَضْتُ جودَكَ ساعَةً
بِشِعْريَwith my poetry إِلاَّexcept that كانَit was أَشْعَرَmore poetic مِنْthan شِعْريmy poetry
بِشِعْريَ إِلاَّ كانَ أَشْعَرَ مِنْ شِعْري
And by God, never for a moment did I challenge your generosity
With my poetry without its proving more poetic than my poetry.
كَأَنَّas though عَطاياكَyour gifts الجَسيمةimmense أَقْسَمَتْhad sworn
كَأَنَّ عَطاياكَ الجَسيمة أَقْسَمَتْ
بِأَنّيthat I لاnot أَنْفَكُI cease مُهْتَضَمَdeprived of one's due الشُّكْرِgratitude
بِأَنّي لا أَنْفَكُ مُهْتَضَمَ الشُّكْرِ
As though your immense gifts had sworn
That I would forever be thwarted in giving due thanks.
